Schwechat Airport (VIE) is to the southeast and connects to the centre by regional train and by the dedicated airport express. Vienna is also very well connected by train to Bratislava, Budapest and Prague, opening the door to combining two cities in one trip.
The Naschmarkt neighbourhood, with its market and terraces, makes a good base for a group that wants to be close to the Ring without paying the prices of the most monumental part of the centre. The historic trams that circle the Ring are also a cheap way to see much of the city without walking.
