Flying to Rome when everyone starts from a different city
Rome is one of the easiest destinations to pitch to a group: almost nobody says no, and almost everyone has a direct flight from their own city. The historic centre is walkable, so it barely matters where you end up sleeping as long as it's inside the Aurelian Walls or near a metro stop.
Fiumicino (FCO) is the big airport and the one with the most routes; it's connected to Termini station by the direct Leonardo Express train, which takes just over half an hour. The city's other airport, Ciampino, mostly handles low-cost flights and sits further to the southeast. If the group lands split between the two, matching arrival times matters more than matching terminals.
Outside the tourist core, neighbourhoods like Testaccio and Trastevere work well as a base for a group: they're a short walk or metro ride from the historic centre, have plenty of nightlife of their own, and accommodation tends to be cheaper than around the Pantheon or the Trevi Fountain.
Rome is also a city of small restaurants, so for a large group it's worth booking ahead rather than just showing up: many trattorias have few tables and can't always seat eight or ten people without notice.

Where to meet after landing at the Rome airport
It doesn't matter which airports the group flies into: both the train from Fiumicino and the bus from Ciampino end up at Termini station, making it the natural meeting point if someone arrives before the rest. From there, the historic centre and most accommodation are a short metro ride or walk away.
Which countries have a direct flight to Rome
Rome is one of the destinations with the most direct flight options in all of Europe: Spain, France, the UK and Germany all have several daily flights from multiple cities, and low-cost carriers cover Central and Eastern Europe well (Poland, Hungary, Romania). The Nordic countries and the Balkans have less frequency, usually one or two flights a day, so it's worth checking the schedule with more room to spare there.
Before you go to Rome
- Book a timed-entry ticket for the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums: these are the two places where queues eat up half the morning.
- Many churches require covered shoulders and knees, even in August. A scarf in your bag solves the problem.
- July and August are stifling and packed; spring and October tend to be far more pleasant for walking around all day.
